The Ladino Song Project

WHAT IS THE LADINO SONG PROJECT?

The Ladino Song Project is a database of Ladino song original lyrics translated into English. It is online, free for anyone to use.

WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?

I have been involved in performances, recordings and research of the Sephardic Song repertory, of which Ladino Songs is the most important part, for over 20 years. I have accumulated a vast library of manuscripts, rare songbooks, romanceros (a collection of romantic Sephardic ballads, poems and songs) and sheet music which I wish to make more available. My goal is to offer all original Ladino lyrics and my own translations, absolutely free, in one place on the internet. As the number of songs increases we will undoubtedly move the project to its own site. Furthermore, for a modest fee, we will provide as much sheet music and recorded materials (mp3’s) for these songs as we have or can find.

We are in the process of pouring our old database into this webpage. Please feel free to send us your comments, suggestions, requests or additional songs we may not know of. Thank you for your interest and may you find what you are looking for!

  • Ladino Lyrics
    A la nana y a la buba
    Se durma la criatura
El Dio grande que los guadre
A los niños de los males

    English Lyrics
    Grandma’s lullaby,
    The child sleeps
    May the great God protect
    All children from sorrows

  • Ladino Lyrics
    A la puerta del rio
    se sienta y llora
    tiene el marido viejo
    la picarona

y a la puerta del rio
    está una al agua
    peinando sus cabellos
    cogiendo el ámbar

    y a la noche y antenoche
    parió Meroma
    veinticinco ratones
    y una paloma.

y a la puerta del rio
    está un barrilete
    lleno de sardinitas
    escabeche.

y a la puerta del rio
    crecen cebollas
    perejil y culantro
    para la olla

    Tu marido y el mío
    son dos maridos
    cuando van por calle
    son dos perdidos

Y en la orilla del monte
    vive mi suegra
    por no cortar zapato
    no voy a verla

    English Lyrics
    At the river gate
    she sits and weeps
    she’s got an old husband
    the spicy young girl

    At the river’s mouth
there's a young girl in the water
    combing her hair
    and perfuming it with amber

Last night and the night before
    Meroma gave birth
    to twenty-five mice
    and a dove

    And at the river’s mouth
    there's a little barrel
    full of sardines
    soaked in brine

    At the river’s mouth
    onions grow as well as
    parsley and cilantro
    for the cooking pot

    Your husband and mine
    are two of a kind
when they walk down the street
they are like two lost souls

And at the foot of the mountain
    lives my mother-in-law,
In order not to use up my shoes
I’m not going to visit her

  • Ladino Lyrics
    A la una yo nací
    A las dos m’engrandecí
    Alas tres tomi amante
    A las cuatro me cazí

    Dime niña donde vienes
    Que te quero conocer
    Y si no tienes amante
    Yo te hare defender

    Yendome para la guerra
    Dos besos al aire dí
    Uno fue para mi madre
    Y el otro para ti"

    English Lyrics
    At one I was born
    At two I grew up
At three I took a lover
    At four I married

Tell me young lass where do you come from
For I wish to know you
And if you have no lover
    I will defend you

    Going off to war
I blew two kisses into the air
    One was for my mother
    And the other for you

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Tu madre cuando te parió
    y te quitó al mundo
    corasón ella no te dió
    para amar segundo

    Adío, adío querida
    no quero la vida
    me l'amargates tú

    Hermosa sos en cantidad
    honestedad no tiene
    si mil miliones me darás
    mi gente no te queren

    Va, búxcate otro amor
    aharva otras puertas
    aspera otro ardor
    que para mí sos muerta

    English Lyrics
Your mother when she gave you birth
and brought you into the world
she did not give you a heart
    to love another

    Farewell, farewell my love
    I don't want life
you have embittered it to me

    You are so beautiful
    but you are dishonest
were you to give me millions
my family still would still not love you

    Go look for another love
    knock on other doors
    wait for another flame
as for me, you are dead

  • Ladino Lyrics
Ah el novio no quere dinero!
Quere a la novia de mazal bueno.
    Yo vengo a ver!
Que gozen y logren y tengan muncho bien!

Ah, el novio no quere ducados!
Quere a la novia de mazal alto.
    Yo vengo a ver! ...

Ah, el novio no quere manillas!
Quere a la novia cara de alegría.
    Yo vengo a ver! ...

    English Lyrics
Ah, the bridegroom wants no money
He wants his bride of good fortune
    I come to see
May they be joyous and prosper

Ah, the bridegroom wants no ducats
He wants his bride of great fortune
    I come to see ...

Ah, the bridegroom wants no bracelets.
He wants his bride and her joyful face
I have come to see ...

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Al monte de Sinai
    Subió el señor Mosé,
    Con señor Josuá en compañía,
    Porque siempre bien le fué.

    Los malachim se espantaron
    De ver a un hombre amado;
Y Dios, con su propia mano
    La Ley Santa le escribió

Y Dios, con su propia mano
    La Ley Santa le escribió
    Y en tablas de diamante
    A Mosé se la entregó

    Ay, mi Dios, te haremos
    Santa, Santa, fraguaremos
    La menorah encenderemos
Con la ayuda de los cielos

    Y en tablas de diamante
    A Mosé se la entregó
    Y al bajar del monte
    Las tablas se le quebró

    Y al bajar del monte,
    Las tablas se le quebró
    Los chachitos que quedaron
    Mosé los apañó

    Los cachitos que quedaron
    Mosé los apañó
    Y Mosé, con alegría
    A los chiquitos enseño"

    English Lyrics
    Up to Mount Sinai
    Moses climbed up
    Accompanied by Joshua
For he had always been good to him

    The angels were frightened
To see such a beloved man
And God, with His own hand
Writing for him the Holy Law

And God, with His own hand.
Wrote for him the Holy Law
    On tablets of diamonds
    And brought them to Moses

Yes, my God we shall make it for You
Holy, holy, we shall build it
    We will light the menorah
    With help from the heavens

    On tablets like diamonds
    He brought them to Moses
And as he came down from the Mount
    The tablets broke

As he came down from the Mount
    The tablets were broken
    The little pieces that remained
    Were repaired by Moses

    The little pieces that remained
    Were repaired by Moses
    And he joyfully
    Showed them to the children

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Al ruido de una fuente
    Una zagala vi
    Al ruido de la agua
    Una voz yo senti
    Senti una voz que dizía
Ay de mi, sola en mi

    Cuando la vide solica
    Le declarí mi amor
    Y en su cara bonica
    Tres besos le dí
    Entonces me dixo la niña
    Otros tres se hazen seix

    English Lyrics
    By the resounding fountain
    I saw a young shepherdess
    By the resounding water
    I heard a voice
    I heard a voice saying
Woe is me, alone am I

    When I saw her alone
I declared my love to her
    And on her pretty face
    I gave her three kisses
Then the girl said to me
    Another three will make six

  • Ladino Lyrics

    English Lyrics
There in the desert I saw burning
I saw the tablets of the Law brought down
And look, this man is our teacher Moses
Who went up and came down from the Heavens

The angels of Heaven want to burn him
Born of woman, what does he look for in sanctity?

The angels of Heaven are envious of him
He is but a man, what does he search for in Heaven?

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Alta, alta va la luna
    La hora de amanecer.
    Hixa hermoza sin ventura
    Nunca llegue a nacer.

    Yo era de quinze años
    Empecí a hazer l'amor
    Con un mancevo berbante,
Que a la fin él me dexó.

    Yo era de vanda alta
    No savía de servir.
    Por cayer con ti berbante,
    Vene agora a sofrir.

    English Lyrics
    High, high, the moon rises
    When the dawn arrives
    Beautiful, luckless daughter
    Never allowed to blossom

    I was fifteen years old
When I began to make love
    With a young ne’er-do-well
    Who eventually left me

    I was of noble birth
And didn't know how to serve
But when I fell for you
    Then suffering came

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Alta, alta va la luna
    Cuando empeza amanecer.
    Hija hermoza sin ventura
    Nunca llegue a nacer

    Los paxaricos de los cielos
Cantan debajo del arbol de flor.
    Allí se asentan
    Los que sufren del amor

    Mis redondas montañas altas
    Llevanme onde el mi amor
    En sus brazos caeré
    Después moriré

    Los mis ojos se incheron
De mirar tanto a la mar
    Vapores vayan y vienen
    Para mi letras no hay

    Mama mía, la mi mama
    Un consejo da me tu
    Un consejo da me mama
    Que sin ventura nací

    Ah hija mía, mi querida
    Que consejo que te de
    Sin ventura si nascites
    Que no iguaras a nacer

    English Lyrics
    High, high, the moon rises
    When the dawn arrives
    Beautiful, luckless daughter
    Never allowed to blossom

    The birds in the sky
    Sing beneath the flowering trees
    There they sit
    Those who suffer from love

    My round and high mountains
    Bring me to my beloved
Into his arms I will fall
    And then I’ll die

    My eyes are swollen
From looking so long at the sea
    Ships are come and go
For me there are no letters

    Mother, my mother
    Give me advice
    Give me your advice mother
For I was born without luck

    Oh, my daughter, my dear
What advice can I give you
    If you were born unlucky
Then you shouldn’t have been born

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Aman doctor, dopa me curía
    Porque quero yo vivír
De los lados de la merequía
    Muy presto me voy murir

    Es lado que duele
    El corazon me bate
    Y si salgo loca
    No hay quien me hace

    Amor hizístes
    Muy lindo mancebo

    Y me derites
    Por muelcevo

    Amor me repentí

    Que amor con ti

    English Lyrics
Aman, doctor, medicine will cure me
    Because I wish to live
    From melancholy and worry
    I will soon die

    My side is in pain
    My heart beats hard
    And should I become crazy
There will be no one to take care of me

    You made love
    You beautiful young man

    And you dissolve me
    Like a mill grinder

    Oh love, I regret

    Making love to you

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Yo non havlo con ninguno
    Solo con mi primo amor
Ay lele le, ay lele lo

    Andemos al café
    Yo seré tu cavalier
    Ay lele...

Tu sos una roza, tu sos una flor
    Cresida en la frescura

    Onde el sol no dio
    Ay lele…

    English Lyrics
    I don’t speak to anyone
    Only with my first love
    Ay lala…

    Let’s go to the café
    I’ll be your cavalier
    Ay lala…

You are a rose, you are a flower
Which blossomed in a cool bower

Where the sun refused to shine
    Ay lala…

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Arvoles lloran por lluvia
    y montañas por aire

    por ti querido amante
Lloro y digo qué va a ser de mí
En tierras ajenas me vo murir

    Blanca sos, blanca vistes
    blanca la tu figura
    Blancas flores caen de ti
    De la tu hermozura
    Lloro y digo …

    Deshojar quero una roza
    y hacerme un vestido
Para irme a pasear con ti
    mi querido
    Lloro y digo …

Enfrente de mi hay un angelo
    con tus ojos me mira
    llorar quero y no puedo
    mi corazón suspira
    Lloro y digo …

    English Lyrics
    Trees cry for rain
    And mountains for air
That is how my eyes weep
    For you, beloved
I weep and ask what will become of me
In a far away land I shall die

You’re fair-skinned, you dress in white
    Fair is your face
    White flowers fall from you
    From your beauty.
    I weep …

I wish to depetal a rose
And make a garment for myself
In order to go with you,
    My dear.
    I weep …

There is an angel in front of me
With your eyes he looks at me
I want to cry, but cannot
    My heart sighs
    I weep …

  • Ladino Lyrics

    a ti dezeo alcancar
Si yo a ti no t'alcancí
mi querida la vida te vo emprezentar
    Que yo por ti ...

    English Lyrics
    The almond trees I planted
    Are like your greenish eyes
    For you,
For you I’m dying of love

The door of my love has opened
My eyes have swollen with tears
Like the spring she burst forth
The beautiful young girl that I love
    For I am dying ...

You are very beautiful my dear
I wish to win you over
    If I cannot,
I will make you a gift of my life
    For I am dying ...

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Avre este abajour bijou
    Avre la tu ventana
    Por ver tu cara morena
    al Dió daré mi alma

Por la tu puerta yo pasí
    Y la topí cerrada
    La llavedura yo bezí
    Como bezar tu cara

No quiero más que me hables
    ni por mi puerta passes
    más antes me querías bien
    agora te yelates

    Si tú de mí t'olvidarás
    Tu hermozura piedrarás
    Ningun niño t'endeñaras
    En los mis brasos mueraras

    English Lyrics
    Open your shade my jewel
    Open your window
    To see your dark face
To God I would give my soul

    I passed by your door
    And found it closed
    I kissed the lock
As I would kiss your face

I want nothing more than that you
might talk to me and pass by my door
You used to love me well
    Now you have turned cold

    Should you forget me
    You will lose your beauty
No man will condescend to be with you
And in my arms you’ll die

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Avre tu puerta cerrada
Qu'en tu balcón luz no hay
    El amor a ti vela

como te la dio el Dió
    La hermozura tuya es pura
    la meresco sólo yo

    English Lyrics
    Open your closed door
For on your balcony, there is no light
    Love will fly to you
    Let's go, my flower
    Let's go away from here

    I asked for your beauty
How did God give it to you.
    Your beauty is pure
    Only I deserve it.

    Thinking of you

    My father is reading
    He’ll hear us.
    Take away his glasses
    He’ll fall asleep.

    My brother is writing
    He’ll hear us
    Take away his pen
    He’ll fall asleep

    My mother is
    Cooking
    She’ll hear us
    Take away her ladle
    She’ll fall asleep

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Axerico de quinze años
    Su hermosura es una
    Ya empezó hacer l'amor
    Como una criatura

    Aunque sos morena?

    Ah, morena
    Morena de mi corazón
Con un bezo y un abrazo

    Sabrás, la mi querida
Que por tí me muero yo

    English Lyrics
    A fifteen year old maiden
    Beautiful as none other
I have begun to love her
    Like a child

    I passed through seven cities
    From Paris to London
And I found no one like you
    Even though you are dark-skinned

    Ah, dark one,
    Dark one of my heart
With a kiss and an embrace
Give them to me for love
    Know, my dear beloved
That for you I would die

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Mancebo, ay mancebo
    Ay mancebo tan gentil
    Si para Francia vos ibax
    al mi amor saludarex

    Que senal me dabax dama
    Que lo quero conocer
El es alto como el pino
    Derecho como el fener

    Benea caballo blanco
De los que benea el rey
    En su mano la derecha
    Una lansa lleva el

    English Lyrics
    Young man, oh young man
    Oh young man so gentle
If you are going to France
    Give greetings to my love

What sign do you give me madam
    That I may recognize him
He is as tall as a pine
Straight as a beam of light

    He rides a white horse
Like the ones the king rides
    In his right hand
    He carries a lance

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Bin el barach welyum
    l'wila ya machlaha
    bi ha farach marrum
    oula manansaha

    Yalilit l'barach
    netsa krak el yum

    ot hi l'olmei'ad
    beino uveini

    English Lyrics
    Between yesterday and today
    O small and beautiful night
I am very happy and in love
I hope to God I will not forget

    O divine night
    I remember you
    my heart is happy
    I have lost my sleep

    If I safeguard the sabbath
    God will safeguard me
    it is an understanding
    between Him and me

  • Ladino Lyrics
Como la rosa en la güerta
    Y las flores sin avrir
    Ansí es una donzella
    A las horas del murir

    Tristes horas en el día
    Que hazina ya cayó
Como la reina en su lecho
    Ya cayó y se desmayó

    Lágrimas de una madre
El Dío ya las va sintir
    pensa que agora pacites
    aspera buen avenir

    Su gracia y su mirada
    eran mi consolación
    al mi lado se asentaba
    su mano en mi corazón

    Avrid puertas y ventanas
    a mi hija acudir
    quen la vía la llorava
    de ver este angel murir

    English Lyrics
Like the rose in the garden
And flowers not yet in bloom
    There lies a young maiden
    At the hour of death

That day, sad were the hour
    As she fell ill
Like the queen on her bed
She lost her strength and fainted

    The tears of a mother
    God will soon feel them
    Though you now feel pain
    A better future awaits you

    Her grace and her look
    Were my consolation.
At my side she would sit
    Her hand on my heart.

    Open the doors and windows
    Come to my daughter
    Those who saw her crying
Those who saw this angel die.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Cuando el rey Nimrod
    Al campo salía
    Mirava en el cielo
    Y en la estreyería
    Vido la luz santa
    En la giudería
    Que havia de nacer
    Avraham avinu

    Avram avinu, padre querido
    Padre bendicho, luz de Israel

La mujer de Terah quedo preñada
De día en día el la preguntava
De que teneix la cara tan demudada
Ella ya savía el bien que tenía

    Saludemos al compadre
    Y tambien al moël
    Que por su zekhut
    Mos venga el goël
    Y ri'hma a todo Israel

    English Lyrics
    When King Nimrod
    Went out into the fields
    He looked at the heavens
    And at all the stars
    He saw a holy light
    Above the Jewish quarter
A sign that Abraham our father
    Was about to be born

    Abraham our father, beloved father
    Blessed father, light of Israel

    Terah's wife was pregnant
Day after day he would ask her
Why her face was so changed
She already knew the good thing she had within

    Let us greet the godfather
    And also the moel
    Because of his virtue
    May the Messiah come
    To redeem all Israel

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Dai de cenar al despozado
Dai de cenar que no ha cenado
    Dai de cenar al despozado,
Dai de cenar sopa de nabo.

    Parala novia una gallina,
Y para el novio una sardina
    Parala novia pan sobado,
Y para el novio de salvado.

Tate Tate, que no hay donde
Dejai el amor para la noche,
Tate Tate, que no hay nada,
    Dejai el amor para maňana.

    Dai de cenar al despozado
Dai de cenar que no ha cenado
    Dai de cenar al desposado,
Dai de cenar sopa de nabo.

Ay ‘al addin, que no hay donde
Dejai el amor para la noche,
Ay ‘al addin, que no hay nada,
    Dejai el amor para manana.

    English Lyrics
    Serve dinner to the groom,
For he has not dined yet.
    Serve dinner to the groom
    Give him a turnip soup

    To the bride a chicken
And to the groom a sardine
To the bride a soft bread
And to the groom what's left

Well, well, there is no place (to go)
Postpone the loving till the night.
    Well, well, no rush,
Wait for the morning for love.

    Serve dinner to the groom,
For he has not dined yet.
    Serve dinner to the groom
    Give him a turnip soup

    According to the Din (Tora)
Postpone the loving till the night.
According to the Din you should not rush,

  • Ladino Lyrics
    De las altas mares
    Traen una cativa
    Cubierta en el oro
    Y en la perla fina

    En la su frente
    Una piedra zafira
    Más arrelumbra de noche
Que el sol de a medio día

    El Rey era mancevo
    Y se enamoraría
    La Reina era muchacha
    Y se encelaría

    English Lyrics
    From the high seas,
    They bring a captive
    Covered with gold
    And fine pearls

    On her forehead
    A sapphire stone
Which gleams brighter in the night
    Than the sun at midday

The king was young and handsome
And was to fall in love.
    The queen was a maid
    And would be jealous.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    El día vo llorando
    La noche sin durmir
    Demandando y preguntando
    Fin a cuando vo sufrir

    Alta va la luna
    Cuando empesa a amanecer
    Hija hermosa sin ventura
    Nunca allegue a nacer

    Que buxcas túmancevico
    Estas horas por aquí
Vengo a ver a mi amada
    Que mañana vo a partir

    Con quéardor te amo
    La cual es mi dolor
    Pedrer tus esperansas
    Murir será mijor

Cuando el viento de la sera
    Murmura en tu ventana
    Recórdate túmi amada
    Los puntos de muestro amor

    English Lyrics
    I cry throughout the day
    At night I cannot sleep
    Asking again and again
    When will my suffering cease

    High goes the moon
    When it begins to rise
    Beautiful girl without happiness
    Never asking to be born

What do you seek young man
At this hour in these parts
I come to see my love
    For tomorrow I must leave

I love you with such ardor
    And such is my pain
That better it is to die
    Than to lose all hope

    When the evening wind
    Murmurs at your window
    Remember my beloved
The sweet moments of our love

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Prima vez que yo pasí
    Te vide en el balcón
    La mirada que me miras
    Me quema el corazón

Si yo me asento en el balcón
    No lo hago por mirar
    Pensando en mi destino
    Yo me meto a llorar

    Cual seria mi destino
    Lo queria ahora entender
    Dimelo amor y si túqueres
    Te lo hare defender

    De amor d’un mancevo
    No me puedes defender
    Se infincóen el mi corazón
    Que me vo a depedrer

    Ma porquémi querida
    Túme hablas siempre ansí
Una vez que ya lo sabes
Que yo siempre en ti pensí

    No topídingún provecho
    Si yo pensaréen ti
    Munchas vezes ya lo hize
    Ma siempre me arrepentí

    Una tala respuesta
    No esperaba yo sentir
    Me plazía mas la muerte
    Que tu amor consenter

    English Lyrics
The first time I passed by
I saw you on the balcony
The glance you cast my way
    Burned in my heart

If I sit on the balcony
I don’t do it to look at passersby
    Thinking of my fate
    I begin to cry

    What will be my destiny
I want to understand it now
Tell it to me love, and if you wish
I’ll be there to protect you

    You cannot protect me
    From the one I love
    He has entered my heart
    And I am losing myself

    But tell me my love
Why you always speak to me like this
    You must know
That I think of you always

    Well there’s absolutely no use
    In thinking of you
I’ve done it in the past
    But always regretted doing so

    Such an answer
    I did not expect
    I would rather die
    Than consent to loving you

  • Ladino Lyrics
Estabase el Pai Pero sentadito al sol
    Con las manos puestas
    Y afuera el cordon
    Y alalan y alalan…

Mirole las damas desde el corredor
    Que's eso Paipero
    Que's eso señor
Que es eso que asoma por el pantalon

Eso son las balas de la municion
    Esa es la escopeta
    Con que cargo yo
    Alalan y alalan…

Suba usted Paipero, suba usted señor
    No puedo señoras
    No puedo por Dios
Que para tantas damas no hay abasticion

Quiso que no quiso arriba subio
    Con aguas de rosas
    Lavaranselo
    Con toallas de holanda secaranselo

Y en un pesito de oro pesaronselo
Y ciento veinte libras y mas un cuarteron
    A medianoche l’arquita revento y 120 damas a todas empreno

    Y alalan y alalan…

Ciento veinte cunas, todas en un corredor
    Menos la de la cocinera
Que en el techo la colgo
Cordon del frailecico, que rico cordon

    English Lyrics
Brother Peter was sitting in the sun
    Wth his white underwear
    With hands on his rope
    And alalan and alalan…

The nuns watched him from the corridor:
What is this rising from your pants Brother Peter?
It is the shotgun which I pack
    With bullets for ammunition

Rise up Brother Peter, rise now
I cannot, I cannot by God
    For so many ladies
    I just don’t have enough

    Reluctantly he stood up
    With rose water
    They washed him
And with towels from Holland they dried him

On a scale of gold they weighed him
One hundred-twenty pounds and a quarter
At midnight the charge exploded to impregnate 120 women
Minus the cook which he had forgotten

Thank you Brother Peter, but for me you were in short supply
No I wasn’t, I’m bringing it to you now
Between the stoves he pushed against her and from his strength
The wall fell like the feather of a chicken

    And after nine months
They all gave birth to girls
Except the cook to a boy
    And alalan and alalan…

120 cradles all in a corridor
    Less the cook’s
For they hung her up on the roof
The little brother’s rope, what sweet rope

    English Lyrics
The King of France had three daughters
One of them embroidered and the other sewed
The youngest one was making a tapestry
While working she soon fell asleep

Her mother, seeing this, wanted to speak to her
Do not speak to me mother, don’t interrupt me
I was in the middle of a very happy dream
You were having a dream, I will explain it for you

At the door I saw the full moon appear before me
At the window I saw the star Diana appear before me
At the well I saw a golden bowl appear before me
With three little birds pecking at the gold

The full moon is your mother-in-law
The star Diana is your sister-in-law
The three little birds are your brothers-in-law
And the golden bowl is the king’s son, your husband

  • Ladino Lyrics
    El rey por muncha madruga
    El rey por muncha madruga
    Onde la reina iba
    Onde la reina iba

A la reina topo en cavellos
    Peinandose sus destrensados.
Con espejo de oro en sus manos
    Mirandose su bel galano

El rey por burlar con ella
El rey por burlar con ella
    Le apreto el lado
    Le apreto el lado

    Estate Angelino
    El mi primer enamorado
    Dos hijos tengo tuyos
Y dos del rey se hacen cuatro

    Escapando estas palavras
    La su cara aboltaría
    Pardon sinor rey
    Un sueño soltaría

    Sueno vos soñaríax
    Yo vo lo soltaría
    Con un vestido blanco
    Y un collar colorado.

    English Lyrics
The king, who rises early in the morning
The king, who rises early in the morning
    Went to see his queen.
    Went to see his queen.

He found her with loosened hair
    Combing out her tresses.
With a golden mirror in her hand
    Looking at her beautiful body

    The king in jest
    The king in jest
    Touched her on her side
    Touched her on her side

    Be still, Angelino
    My first lover
I have two sons by you
And two by the king makes four
    Having uttered these words
    she turned her face
    Pardon me my king
I must have been relating a dream

    You may have been dreaming
But I will explain it to you
    With a white dress
    And a red necklace

En la mar hay una torre
    En la torre una ventana
En la ventana hay una hija
    Que a los marineros llama

    Dame tu mano palomba
    Quero suvir a tu nido
    Maldicha que durme sola
    Vengo a durmir contigo

Si la mar era de leche
    Yo me haría pexcador
    Pexcaréa mis dolores
    Con palavricas de amor

Si la mar era de leche
    Yo me haria vendedor
    Caminando y pregundando
    D'onde s'empeza l'amor

    No me matas con cuchillo
    Ni menos con revolver
    Matame con tus amores
    Qu’en tus brazos muerere

    English Lyrics
In the sea there is a tower
    In the tower, a window
In the window a young girl
Who calls out to the sailors

Give me your hand my dove
I wish to climb up to your nest
Cursed is the one who sleeps alone
I am coming to sleep with you

    If the sea were milk
    I would become a fisherman
    And fish for my sorrows
    With little words of love

    If the sea were milk
    I would become a merchant.
    Travelling and asking
    Where does love begin

Do not kill me with a knife
    Nor with a gun
    Kill me with your love
For in your arms I wish to die

    I approached her side
    I saw her crying
    Tears upon her eyes
    Shining pearls
I asked her what is wrong, what troubles you
    Who made you suffer

    ‘Awed, ‘Awed

    Y un poquito mas adentro
    Con su Rajel se encontro
    No me matis de repente

    Esteemed Rachel
    Blessed by God
Being the wife of the governor
    Awed…

As she was walking one day
    With her ladies in waiting
    She met a young man
    Who treated her amorously
    Awed…

    He sent her a letter
    Declaring his love
    He sent her a ring
Which was costly as a half town
    Awed…

    He sent her many gifts
    Precious jewelry
    with gemstones more precious

    And the jealous governor
    Knew of everything
    Awed…

    The furious governor
    Walked to his home
    And with his famous fist
    Knocked the door at once
    Awed…

    At the entrance
    He found the young man.
    And with his famous fist
    He beat him at once
    Awed…

    A little further inside
    He saw his Rachel
    Please do not kill me
    I have confessed, she said
    Awed…

    Confessed of my wrongdoing
    In this world
But, he, with his famous fist
Cut off her head at once
    Awed…

    Esturulu went to the well
    To see her handsome one
    Esturulu…
    Mama's Esturulu
May trouble never come upon you

    Esturulu went to the roof
    To see her love
    Esturulu…
    Mama’s Esturulu
May trouble never come upon you

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Fel sharah canet betet masha
La signorina aux beaux yeux noirs
Come la luna etait la sua faccia
    qui eclairait le boulevard

    Volevo parlar shata metni
Because her father was a la gare
    E con su umbrella darabetni
    En reponse a mon bonsoir

    Perque my dear tetrabini
    Cuando yo te amo kitir
    And if you want tehebini
Il n’y pas lieu de nous conquerir

    Tutta la notte achlabiki
Et meme jusqu’au lever du jour
    And every morning astanaki
Pour le voeu de notre amour

    English Lyrics
The girl with beautiful dark eyes
    Was strolling down the street
Her face, lovely as the moon
    Lit up the boulevard

I wanted to speak to her, but she insulted me
As her father was at the train station nearby
With her umbrella, she hit me
    In reply to my greeting

    Why hit me my dear
When I’m so in love with you?
If you want to show me your love
    Then we musn’t quarrel

All night I’ll wait for you
    Even until dawn
    And every morning thereafter
For the sake of our love"

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Fiestaremos juntos gloriozos
El dia de hoy con gozo
    Dia alegre es nombrado
Con plaser de judios es membrado

    Este dia es alegría.
    Mos recuerda la manzía,
De ver a los Judios sofriendo
Y a la fin salvasión ya tuvieron

Dos mil años de tan desgracia,
Sin poder reposar, y sin eshueño,
    Arastando mil y un lugar,
Sin tener un lugar para reposar

    Alsaremos la bandiera
    Por amor de muestra tierra,
    Con sudor de Judios arofiadas
    Con rosas y cunjas asembradas

    English Lyrics
    Let us celebrate together
    This day with gladness
It is a day of happiness,
    That Jews joyfully remember

    This day is happiness
Though it reminds us of the anguish,
    And suffering of the Jews,
But in the end salvation was theirs

Two thousand years of such disgrace,
Unable to rest and without a dream,
Wandering through a thousand and one places,
And yet with no place to rest

    Let us raise the flag
For the love of our land,
    Watered with Jewish sweat,
    And planted with roses

  • Ladino Lyrics
Avridme galanika que ya va amanecer

Arrovemos de la sirma vamos a echar

Siñor padre está escriviendo y mos sentirá
Arrovemos de la tinta vamos a echar

Toda la noche, toda, vos estuve asperando,
Con las puertas aviertas, cirios arrelumbrando

    English Lyrics
Open my young beauty for dawn is coming
I open for you my beautiful love
at night I don't sleep thinking of you

My mother is sleeping and she'll hear us
Let's steal her embroidery and throw it away

My father is writing and he'll hear us
Let's steal his ink and throw it away

All night I wait for you
With open doors and candles shining

  • Ladino Lyrics
    ¡Ay, quién tuviera la dicha
    de ganar lo bien servido,
    como tuvo Gerineldo
    siendo del rey bien querido!
    Una mañana de junio
    se levantó Gerineldo
a dar agua a sus caballos
    a las orillas del mar.
    Mientras los caballos beben
    Gerineldo echa un cantar,
y la infanta que le oye
    pronto le empezó́ a llamar:
    —Gerineldo, Gerineldo,
    mi camarero leal,
    si fueras rico en hacienda
    como eres galán pulido,
    dichosa fuera la dama
    que se casara contigo.
    —Como soy criado vuestro,
    señora, burláis conmigo.
    —No me burlo, Gerineldo,
que de veras te lo digo:
    ¡Quién te cogiera una noche
    tres horas a mi albeldrío!

    English Lyrics
Oh, whoever had the good fortune
    to win what was deserved
    as had Gerineldo
being well loved by the king!
    One morning in June
    Gerineldo got up
to give water to his horses
    by the seashore.
    While the horses were drinking
    Gerineldo began to sing,
and the princess who heard him
    instantly began to call out:
    —Gerineldo, Gerineldo,
    my loyal servant,
if you were as rich in land
as you are in good looks,
    the lady would be lucky
    who married you.
    —As I am your servant,
    my lady, you mock me.
—No, I am not mocking you, Gerineldo,
what I tell you is the truth:
Oh, to have a night with you,
    three hours at my disposal!

Seix de la noche vo pasar

Sale a la puerta te verex
    Sale a la ventana
    Avlame y descúvreme
    Secretos de mi alma

Por a tu puerta yo pazí
    Y la topí cerrada
    La llave dura yo bezí
    Como bezar tu cara

    En el café del amanecer
    Hay luces de colores
    Ansíesta mi corazon
    Quemando de amores

    English Lyrics
Six in the evening I stroll
    With all my friends
    I stop by your window
    Playing the mandolin

    Aman, aman, she is beautiful
    Like a blossoming rose

Come to the door, I’ll see you
    Come to the window
Talk to me and reveal to me
    The secrets of your soul

    I passed by your door
    And found it closed
    So I kissed the key
As I would kiss your face

    In the caféat dawn
    There are lights and colors
    That is how my heart
    Is burning with love

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Judia, Judia será tu nombre...

Mi frente besó mi madre kuando nasi
    un beso de amor
me dió mi madre kuando nasi.

    Entokando la dolor me decia:
Judia, Judia, será tu nombre [x2]

    Kandelas de shabat asendió madre
    inflamando mis ojos.
Kantes de fiesta kantan mi padre,
    asendieron mi korason.

    Y él me decia:
Judia, Judia, será tu nombre [x2]

    En mis ojos pretos,
    en mis pretos kaveyos
    ya amaste mi nasion
    briyan komo kandelas
    kandelas sin konsolasión.

    Silenciosa, amataldosen, decian:
Judia, Judia, será tu nombre [x2]

    I me keria fuir,
    piedrerme en el kamino,
no llevar la dolor en mi pecho
en mi pecho no llevar el horror
    de la mala siñala, moría,
quien gritava y llorava en el rio."

    English Lyrics
Judia, Judia will be your name

At birth my mother kissed my forehead,
    A loving kiss
She gave to me when I was born.

    Filled with sorrow she said:
    Your name will be Judia

    She lit the Sabbath candles,
    they illuminated my eyes
my father sang the festive songs,
    which lodged in my heart.

    And he said to me:
    Your name will be Judia

    In my dark eyes,
    in my dark hair
    the love for my country
    burned like candles
    like candles of consolation.

Silently, as they burned out they said:
    Your name will be Judia

    And I wanted to flee,
to lose myself on the path
and to no longer carry this pain in my heart
this horrible sign upon my breast
    as they died screaming
    and crying by the river.

  • Ladino Lyrics
Ken es esto en la ventana
    Ke mi mostra tanto amor
O sono las streyas de la manyana
O son los ojos de mi amor

    Si mi korason ventana tenía
    De poder adientro mirar
O kampos i vinyas se despertavan
    De veder tanto dolor.

    English Lyrics
Who is this at the window,
Who shows me so much love?
    Is it the morning stars,
Or the eyes of my love?

If my heart had a window,
    And could look inside,
    Fields and vineyards would awaken,
    From seeing so much pain.

    English Lyrics

    Yo me hice estibador,
    Ella carda la lana,
Y yo cargo balas de algodón.

A mi no me pario mi madre,
Para que cardara la lana yo,
    Mis manitas blancas,
    Deberían trabajar con seda,

A mi no me pario mi madre,
    Para que sea un estibador,
Gastamos lo mio y lo tuyo,
Todo lo que tu padre nos dio.

The Lord on high gave to us
    A much respected law
    Brought down from Sinai
    We accepted this most sacred
    And glorious gift
From the hand of our God

Give thanks to the Lord for He is good
    And His mercy endures forever

    Blessed be our God
    His name is praiseworthy
    For You are our Savior
    We are at Your command
    Your sons have been called
For we do not believe in another god

    Great voices and thunder
    On the mountain were heard
    To see fire and wondrousness
    The Jews are confused
    And Moses with his brothers
    Asked God for mercy

The Lord of the world spoke
    Come here Moses my son
    For you have no equal
    As it is said
    And I well know
That you believe in no other god

    Moses went up
    To receive the Torah
    Awestruck and nervous
Afraid he would fail in his task
And not knowing what to do
    He asked God for mercy

Sí, a la mar yo ben m’echava
si la sirena licencia me dava
echate a la mar y alcanza

Mi espozica esta en el río
    vestida de amarillo
echate a la mar y alcanza

Entre la mar y la arena
    hay un arvol de canela
echate a la mar y alcanza

    English Lyrics
Between the sea and the river
    There is a quince tree
    Throw yourself into the sea

    My wife is bathing
    Dressed in red
Throw yourself into the sea and reach for me

Yes, I would throw myself into the sea
If the mermaid allowed me to catch her
Throw yourself into the sea and reach for me

My wife is in the river
    Dressed in yellow
Throw yourself into the sea and reach for me

Between the sea and the sand
    There is a cinnamon tree
Throw yourself into the sea and reach for me

I feel on top of the world
Without a lira to my name
    I feel like a millionaire

    English Lyrics
Where is the key that was in the drawer?
Where is the key that was in the drawer?
My grandparents took it with tears in their eyes
from their house in Spain, in Spain
    dreams of Spain
    dreams of Spain

Where is the key that was in the drawer?
My grandparents took it with loving care
they said to their children, this is the very heart
of our house in Spain, in Spain
of our house in Spain, in Spain
    dreams of Spain
    dreams of Spain

Where is the key that was in the drawer?
my grandparents took it with loving care
they gave it to their grandchildren to put in a drawer
our key from Spain, from Spain
our key from Spain, from Spain
    dreams of Spain
    dreams of Spain

  • Ladino Lyrics
Las estreyas de los cielos, querida
    Eyas son que arrelumbran
    En eyas no hay firmeza
    Niña de mi corazon
Ya me abasta la mia passion

Prima vez que yo te vide, querida
    En mi alma entrates
    Rayos de sol me dates
    Niña de mi corazon
    En mis ojos relumbrates

    Una cosa te dire, querida
    El mundo no queda ansí
    Muchas cosas yo pensí
    Niña de mi corazon
    Ainda no te alcanzí

    Ten pasiensia con ti, querida
En estos dias espera tu avenir
    Que mos sera briyante
    Niña de mi corazon
    Mi amor en ti fondíyo

    English Lyrics
The stars in the sky my dear
    They are the ones shining
Yet in them there is no steadiness
    Young maiden of my heart
My passion for you is enough already

The first time I saw you my dear
    You entered my soul
And you gave me rays of sunshine
    Young maiden of my heart
In my eyes you shone brightly

I would tell you one thing, my dear
The world doesn’t stay this way
    I’ve thought of many things
    Young maiden of my heart
But I haven’t reached you yet

Have patience with yourself my dear
In these days you await your future
May they be brilliant for us
    Young maiden of my heart
My love is centered in you

    Los bilbilicos cantan
    Con sospiros de amor

    Where can I find you
    To see you again?

    I am going to die
    I will not live
    Where can I find you
    To see you again?

The rose lets itself be admired
    Looked at, touched, smelled
    But you cruel one
Do not even let yourself be seen

    I am going to die…

  • Ladino Lyrics

    La tuya gracia y hermozura,
Tu lindo cuerpo y tu bivez

  • Ladino Lyrics

    English Lyrics
    My mother-in-law, the dark one
    Taunts me
I cannot live with her anymore
She is very strong, like death
How quickly I can see myself without her

One day, sitting with my husband,
She was behind me like an enemy,
She gave me a pinch, she gave me a big bite
How quickly I can see myself without her

    On the sweetest of days
    She sows bitterness
May the devil come and take her away
For I can no longer live with her
With my mother-in-law, the dark one

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Montañas altas y marinadas

    Amame segun yo t’amo
    Mira que me vo murir

Mira que por ti me va murir

Por la calle ya aquí yo paso
    Mi solumbre no te veras
    Llorando y sufriendo

    English Lyrics
    High-reaching mountains
    High-reaching mountains of ocean hues
    Take me to my love
Take me to my dear one

Love me as I love you
    I shall die without you

Yet I cannot see your tears
    Or know of your longing

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Morena me llaman
    Blanca yo nací
    De pasear galana
    Mi color perdí

    Vestido de verde
    Y de altelí
    Qu’ansi dize la novia
    Con el tchelibi

    Escalerica de oro
    Y de marfíl
    Para que suva la novia
    A dar Kiddushin

    Dizime galana
    Si queres venir
    Los velos tengo fuertes
    No puedo yo venir

    Morena me llaman
    El hijo del rey
    Si otra vez me llaman
    Me voy yo con el

    English Lyrics
They call me the dark one
    Though I was born fair,
    Parading about my beauty
    I lost my color

    Clothed in green
    And brilliant red
    So says the bride
    With her man

    Little ladder of gold
    And of ivory
    For the bride to climb
    To give Kiddushin

    Tell me my beauty
If you wish to come with me
I have taken my marriage vows
And I cannot come with you

They call me the dark one,
    If the king’s son
Should once again call on me,
    I will go with him.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Morenica a mi me llaman
    Yo blanca nací
    El sol del enverano
    Me hizo a mi ansí

    Morenica, graciozica sos,
    Morenica y graciozica y
    Mavramatia mou

    Ya se vista la morena
    Y d’amarillo,
Como la pera en la huerta
    Y el bembrillo

    Morenica a mi me llaman,
    Los marineros
    Si otra vez me llaman
    Me vo con ellos

    Dezilde a la morena
    Si quere venir
Ya nave ya está en vela
    Que ya va partir

    English Lyrics
    They call me “dark one”.
    I was born fair
    The summer sun
    Made me this way

    You are dark and graceful,
    Dark and graceful
    With dark eyes

    The dark beauty
    Is dressed in yellow,
Like the pear in the garden
    And the quince

    The sailors,
    They call me “dark beauty”,
    If they call me again
I will go away with them

    Ask the dark one
    If she wants to come
    The ship has hoisted sail
    And is about to leave

    Nani, nani,

    Que tu padre viene
    Con muncha alegría

    Ay, avriméx la puerta
    Avriméx mi dama, avriméx
    Que vengo muy cansado
    De arar las huertas

Ay, la puerta yo vos avro
    Que veníx cansado

    El hijo en la cuna

    English Lyrics
    Lullaby, lullaby
    The son wants a lullaby
    The mother’s son
    Who will grow tall

    Ah, sleep my soul
    Sleep my life
    For your rather is coming
    With great joy

Ah, open the door for me
Open for me my lady, open
For I come home very tired
    From plowing the fields

Ah, I open the door for you
    For you come tired
And you will see your son
    Sleeping in the cradle

  • Ladino Lyrics
    No la puso su madre
    Cosa ninguna
    La cara de esta novia
    Como la luna

    La onsa de la grasia
    A como la venderé

    No la vendo por onsa
    Ni por cuarterón
Se la doy a mi amado
    De mi corasón

    No la puso su madre
    Ni al bayalde
    La cara de esta novia
    Como el esmalte

    English Lyrics
    The bride’s face
    Bright as the moon
    Needed no makeup
So her mother left it plain

    How much of a dowry
    Can I possibly ask for?

I will not sell my face
    For any price
    I will give it
    To my heart’s beloved

    The bride’s face
    Pure as enamel
    Needed no fineries
So her mother left it plain

Como el pexe en la mar

    English Lyrics
    Nights, nights, good nights
    Nights are for making love

    Ah, what nights, my mother
    that seem never to arrive

    Tossing in my bed
Like a fish in the sea

    Le declarí l’amor

    Salí delantre d’ella
    Hermoza como l’estrella
    Ya m’encendió con teya
    Sin tener piadad

    Páxaro d’hermozura
    Linda la tu figura
    Acércate al mió lado
    Te oyeré la boz

    El páxaro s’acerca
    S’acerca del mió lado
    Enfin de dos minutos
    El páxaro boló

    El páxaro bolando
    Mi corasón llorando

    English Lyrics
    In a little house
    I saw a young girl
    She was young in years
I declared my love to her

    I went before her
She was as beautiful as a star
She set on fire like a torch
    Without any pity

    Beautiful bird
    With the beautiful figure
    Come near to my side
So I can hear your voice

    The bird comes near
    Comes near to me
    But after two minutes
    The bird flew away

    The bird went flying
    My heart was weeping
    It left me waiting
    Without pity

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Por amar una donzella
    De aquíde este lugar
Ah yo la amo yo la quero
    Yo sali en su buxquida

Se la demandi a su padre
    Guerra grande me hizo armar

Se la demandí a su madre
    Con palavras me hizo engamar

    Se la demandía su mano
    Con cuchillo me quería matar

    English Lyrics
    To love a maiden
    From here from this place
Oh I love her I want her
I have gone to seek her out

I asked her father for her hand
He wanted to make war with me

I asked her mother for her hand
    With words she deceived me

I asked her for her hand
With a knife she wanted to kill me

  • Ladino Lyrics
Seix de la noche vo pasar
    Con todos mis amigos
    En tu ventana vo pozar
    Tañendo mandolino

Sale a la puerta te verex
    Sale a la ventana
    Avlame y descuvreme
    Secretos de tu alma

Por la tu puerta yo pazí
    Y la topí cerrada
    La llave dura yo bezí
    Como bezar tu cara

    En el café del amanecer
    Hay luzes de colores
    Ansí esta mi corazon
    Quemando de amores

    English Lyrics
Six in the evening I stroll
    With all my friends
    I stop by your window
    Playing the mandolin

Come to the door, I’ll see you
    Come to the window
Talk to me and reveal to me
    The secrets of your soul

    I passed by your door
    And found it closed
    So I kissed the key
As I would kiss your face

    In the café at dawn
    There are lights and colors
    That is how my heart
    Is burning with love

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Porke yoras ermoza mujer?
Kual es el tu grande desplazer?
    O yoras por l'arompida flor,
O yoras por el perdido amor,
    No yoro por l'arompida flor,
Ma yoro por el perdido amor.

    No jores ermoza muzer,
No jores kon tan grande desplazer,
La flor ez komo la mansevez,
Vjene i si va kon la vizez,
    L'amor ez komo la mansevez,
Vjene i si va kon la vizez.

    English Lyrics
Beautiful woman, why do you cry? What is your great displeasure?
Do you cry for a broken flower,
Do you cry for a lost love,
    I don't cry for a broken flower,
It is a lost love for which I cry.

    Don't cry beautiful woman,
Don't cry with such great displeasure,
    The flower is like youth,
Which comes and then goes with old age,
Love too, for that matter, comes like youth
    And goes with old age.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Puncha, puncha la rosa huele
    Que el amor muncho duele
    Tu non naciste para mi
    Presto alexate de mi

    Acodrate de aquella hora
Que yo te besava la boca
    Aquella hora ya paso
    Dolor quedo al corazon

Si otra vez me queres ver
    Sale afuera te havlare
Echa los ojos a la mar
    Allí me puedes encontrar

    English Lyrics
    The thorny rose is fragrant
As love is full of pain
You were not born for me
    Quickly depart from me

    Remember the times
    When I kissed your mouth,
    Those times are gone now
And only sorrow lingers in my heart

If you wish to see me again,
Come outside and I’ll speak with you,
    Look to the sea
    And there you’ll find me

    English Lyrics
    Every night of the Sabbath
    I remember my grandmother
with the light of the candles
    she said her prayers.

    During the long winter nights
    sitting on the cushion
    she sang songs to us
and sung to us lovely tales of love.

    Nani na, nani na
I fell asleep with her Shema
    I remember the songs

    Little staircase of gold
    Of gold and ivory
So the bride can go up
    To take her marriage vows

    We have come to see

    English Lyrics
Rejoicing of the Torah, rejoicing of the Torah
    A new child is born.

    With songs of happiness,
My aunts arrive laden with pies.

    Apples, honey and cherries,
    To sweeten the new year

  • Ladino Lyrics
    En guarta kemada,
    Asentada la fija,
    Pasharos pretos,
    Apretan su korason.

    Por los sielos ariva,
    Pasa la luna,
    Tapando su kara,
    Kon una nuve karbon.

    Siniza i fumo,
    Bolando, kayendo,
    En un esfuenyo malo,
    Sin salvasyon.

    Siniza i fumo,
    Inchen suz ojos,
    No ay ken la desperte,
    A darle konsolasyon.

    English Lyrics
    In the burnt garden,
    There sits a girl,
    Black birds,
    Tighten [around] her heart.

    By the heavens above,
    The moon passes and,
    Covers her face,
    With a cloud of coal.

    Ash and smoke,
    Flying, falling,
    In a nightmare,
    Without salvation.

    Ash and smoke,
    Fill her eyes,
There's no one who can wake her,
    To give her consolation.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Tres hermanicas eran
    Tres hermanicas son
    Las dos estan casadas
    El amor!
    La chica en predición

    El padre con verguensa
    A Rodes la mano
    En medio del camino
    El Amor!
    Castillo le fraguo

    De piedra minudica
    Y laja al rededor
    Sin puerta y sin ventanas
    El amor!
    Que non suva varón

    English Lyrics
    There were three sisters,
    They are sisters three
    Two are married
    Oh love!
    The youngest is fallen

    The father out of shame
    Sent her to Rhodes
    But on the way
    Oh love!
He built a castle for her

    Of fine stone
    And marble all around
    Without a door nor windows
    Oh love!
So that no man could reach her

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Una hija tiene el rey
    Una hija regalada

    La metió en altas torres
    Por tenerla bien guadrada

    Un día por las calores
    S’aparó a la ventana

    Vido venir segadore
    Segando trigo y cevada

    En su puerpo l’asembres trigo
    En su seno la cevada

    English Lyrics
    The king has a daughter
    A much loved daughter

He put her away in high towers
    To have her well guarded

    One very hot day
    She leaned out the window

    She saw a harvester approach
    Reaping wheat and barley

In her body I will sow the wheat
    In her breast the barley.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Una matica de ruda
    Una matica de flor
    Hija mia mi querida
Dime a mi quien te la dio

    Me la dio un mançevico
    Que de mi se enamoro

    Hija mia mi querida
    No t’eches a le perdiçion

    Mas vale un mal marido
    Que un mançevo de amor
Mançevo de amor, la mi madre
La mançana y el buen limon

    English Lyrics
    A sprig of rue
    A sprig of flowers
    My dear daughter
Tell me who gave it to you

A young man gave it to me
A young man who fell in love with me

    My dear daughter
    Don’t compromise your virtue

A bad husband is worth more
    Than a passing flame,
    Mother, a new lover
Is the apple and the sweet lemon

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Una noche a lunar,
    Yo sali a kaminar,
    Kaminando i bushkando,
    Ondo se topa la mar.

    Los ojos mi si abufarun,
Di tanto mirar a la mar,
    Vapores ya van i vyenen,
    Letras para mi no ay.

    Letras alegras resiviremos,
    I las karas mos veremos,
    En un nido durmiremos,
    Presto mos adjuntaremos.

    Madre miya la mi madre,
    Un suenyo mi sonyava,

    Ke la gera se skapava.

    English Lyrics
    One moonlit night,
    I went for a stroll,
    Strolling and searching,
    For the sea.

    My eyes became swollen,
    From staring into the sea,
And the ships, coming and going
There are no letters for me.

    We will receive happy letters,
We will see each others faces,
And we will sleep in one nest,
    We will be reunited.

    Mother mine, my mother
    One dream I dreamed,
    One dream I dreamed,
    That the war was over.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Una noche yo me armí
    Por ver vuestros entrensados
    Dexame la puerta abierta
    Y candil amatado

Tú me queres yo te quero
    Tu madre no nos quere
    Ésta noche arogo al Dío
    En la cama me meneo

    Ni blanca soy ni morena
    Ni cosa de alavarvos
Por las hechas que mi me hazes
    Y en alma mía entrates

    English Lyrics
One night I plucked up the courage
    To see your flowing tresses,
Leave the door open for me
    And the candles out

You love me and I love you
But your mother does not love us,
This night I pray to God,
    Restless in my bed

I am neither fair nor dark
    Nor worthy of your compliments,
    But you’ve shown me love
    Tara la…

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Una pastora to amí
    Una hija hermoza
    De mi chiques yo l’adorí
    Más qu’ella no amí

    Un día que estavamos
    En la huerta sentados
Le dixe yo: “Por tí, mi flor,
    Me muero de amor

En los sus brasos me apretó
    Con amor me bezó
    Me respondió con dulsor:
    “Sos chico para amar!”

    M’engrandecí y la buxquí
    Otro tomó y la pedrí
    Ella se olvidó de mi
    Mas siempre to la amí

    English Lyrics
    A shepherdess I loved
    A beautiful maiden
Since my youth I loved her
I loved no one but her

    One day as we were
    Seated in the orchard
I told her: “For you, my flower,
    I die of love”

She held me tight in her arms
    And kissed me lovingly
    Then answered with sweetness:
“You are too young for love.”

I grew up and looked for her
She chose another and I lost her
    She forgot me
But I will always love her

  • Ladino Lyrics
Una tarde de verano pase por la morería
y vi una mora lavando al pie d’una fuente fría

Yo le dixe mora linda yo le dixe mora bella
deja bever mis caballos d’esas aguas cristalinas

No soy mora caballero que soy d’Espanya nacida
que me cautivaron los moros días de Pascua florida

Si quereís venir conmigo a Espanya te llevaría

Abrid puertas y ventanas balcones y galerías
que por traer una esposa os traigo una hermana mía"

    English Lyrics
One summer afternoon I passed by a Moorish quarter
And I saw a Moorish woman washing by a cold fountain

I told her: "Oh lovely Moorish girl", I said to her: "Beautiful Moorish girl,
let my horses drink from these crystal waters".

"I'm not a Moor, Sir knight, I was born in Spain
The Moors captured me on Easter Sunday"

“If you want to come with me to Spain, I will take you”
"And the clothes, Sir knight, where will I leave them?"

"Those made from silk and wool my horses will carry
And the useless ones, cast them into the river"

When they reached his parents' home the girl cried and sighed
"Why are you crying lovely girl? why are you crying beautiful girl?"

"I cry because in these fields my father came from his hunt
With my little brother Alejandro in his company"

"Open the doors, windows, balconies and galleries
Instead of bringing a wife home, I've brought back my sister”

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Vamos para la orilla
    La orilla de la mar
    Allí te contaré mis males
    Que tem etas a llorar

    Un día del enverano
    Por tu campo yo pasí
    La culebra de tu hermana
    Me salió a maldizir

    Yo al día no fumaba
    Un cigaro de tutún
    Agora paqueto entero
    Por modo de la bija

    Yo al día no debía
    Un vazico de raquí
    Agora carafe entera
    Que me topo trisquí

    English Lyrics
    Let’s go to the shore
To the edge of the sea
There I will tell you my sorrows
And you will start to cry

    One summer day
    I passed by your neighborhood
And that snake of your sister
    Came out and cursed me

On that day I wasn’t smoking
    Even a tobacco cigarette
Now I smoke a whole pack
    Because of that witch

On that day I wasn’t drinking
Even a small glass of arak
Now I drink a whole caraffe
    And I find myself drunk

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Muchachica esta en el baño
    Vestida de colorado
Echate a la mar y alcanza

A la mar yo bien m’echava,
Si la suegra licencia me dava
Echate a la mar y alcanza

Ya salio de la mar la galana
Con un vestido rosal y blanco
    Ya salio de la mar

Entre la mar y el río
Mos crecio un arbol de bembríllo
    Ya salio de la mar

La novia ya salio del baño
El novio ya la esta esperando
    Ya salio de la mar

Entre la mar y la arena
Mos crecio un arbol de almendra
    Ya salio de la mar

    English Lyrics
The young girl went to the baths
    Dressed in red
Throw yourself into thesea, but return to shore

    I’ll jump into the sea
If my mother-in-law will allow it
Throw yourself into the sea, but return to shore

The young beauty came out of the sea
Wearing a pink and white dress
She’s come out of the sea

Between the sea and the river
    A quince tree was growing
She’s come out of the sea

The bride has come out of the baths
    And the groom awaits her
She’s come out of the sea

Between the sea and the sand
    An almond tree was growing
She’s come out of the sea"

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Ya viene el cativo
    Con todas las cativas,
    Dientro de ellas
    Esta la blanca niña

    Ni amanecía,
    Ni era de día,
    Cuando la blanca niña
    Cantava su manzia

    La Muchacha:
    Oh, qué campos verdes,
    Campos de olivas,
    Onde mi madre Gracia,
    Lavava y espandía

    Oh, qué pino hermozo,
    Onde con mi espozo,
    Baxo su solombra,
    Dormíamos con gozo

    Oh, qué tombas blancas,
    Tombas de avuelos
    Paso sovre ellas,
    Como páxaro en su vuelo

    El Mancevo:
    Avrix la mi madre,
    Puertas del palacio,
    Que en lugar de hija,
    Nuera yo vos traigo

    English Lyrics
    The captive is coming
    With all the captive women
    Among them
    Is the white girl.

    It was hardly dawn
    Nor daylight
    And the white girl
    Sang of her sorrow, thus:

    The girl:
    Oh what green fields
    Fields of olive trees
    Where my mother Gracia
    Washed and hung up clothes

    Oh what beautiful pine trees
    Where, with my husband
    Under its shade
    We sleep with delight

    Oh, what white tombs
    Tombs of our grandfathers
    I pass over them
    Like a bird in flight

    The boy:
    Open up, mother
    The palace doors
    For instead of a daughter
    I bring you a daughter-in-law.

  • Ladino Lyrics
    Yo m’enamorí d’un aire,
    D’un aire d’una mujer,
    D’una mujer muy hermoza,
    Linda de mi coraçón

    Yo m’enamorí de noche,
    El lunar ya m’engañó.
    Si esto era de dia
    Yo no atava amor

    Si otro vez m’enamoro
    Será de día con sol,

    Linda de mi coraçón
    Si otro vez m’enamoro

I fell in love with the charms,
With the charms of a woman,
    Of a very beautiful woman,
    The beauty of my heart

I fell in love at night,
    The moonlight deceived me
    If it had been daylight
Love would not have caught me

If I fall in love again,

    Ken pensa de se enamurar,
    Ke fulga de lunar,
    Ke lunar es mentiroso,
    Save enganyar.

    Nus yoris ijika linda,
Ke mi fiju mus va turnar,

    I went to war,
I placed to kisses in the sky
    one is for my mother,
    the other is for you,
    girl of my heart,
    the other is for you.

If you should think of falling in love,
    stay away from the moonlight,
    the moonlight is a liar,
and know how to fool you.

    Don't cry beautiful girl,
my son will return to us,
the kiss that he gave me,
I pass it on to you,
    girl, full of pain;
I pass it on to you.

    Yo s’un mancevo del dor
    Que camino con honor
    Quando veyo hija hermoza
    Ya me toma mi temblor

    Aydede, presto, presto,
    Te echaré al sesto

    Asentada en el poso
    Con un grande desreposo,
    Asperando al mi espozo
Que es la luz de los mis ojos

    Aydede, turnam, turnam
    Ben buralarda durmam

    A la franca te vistites,
    Pareces un director
Todo el mundo ya lo save
    Que sos hijos d’un carbon

    Aydede, presto, presto,
    Te echaré al sesto

    English Lyrics
    I’m a modern young man
    And I behave honorably
When I see a pretty girl
    I tremble with shyness

    Let’s go, hurry, hurry,
I’ll throw you into the basket

    Sitting at the well
    Very restlessly,
    Waiting for my betrothed
Who is the light of my eyes

    Let’s go, I’m turning, turning
I will not stay in one place

You dressed yourself in Western style,
    You look like an executive
    Everyone knows
That you’re the son of a coal miner

    Let’s go, hurry, hurry,
I’ll throw you into the basket"
